VINTAGE ROYAL DOULTON HN1759 “ORANGE LADY” FIGURINE – EARLY ISSUE 1938:
$24.99

Designed by renowned artist Leslie Harradine and first manufactured in 1936, this figurine was purchased by the owner in the period 1940-1950. “Orange Lady” is a classic example of Doulton pottery workmanship, and its subject captures the charm of an old English street vendor. Depicting a Victorian lady selling oranges and made of fine porcelain with a “like new” glossy shine, the colors remain vibrant, and the details are well-preserved. This fine lady measures 8-1/2” high by 4-1/2” wide and weighs in at 16 ounces and was manufactured in 1938, as per the “11” next to the trademark (see below.)

For Royal Doulton figurine collectors, “Orange Lady” is a “must-have” for your display, and for new figurine collectors as well.It is important to note that this figurine is a retired original, and later iterations do not look the same. This HN1759 figurine is in excellent condition – no nicks, chips, cracks, crazing, stains, or noticeable discoloration. Photos accurately show product condition and serve as part of the description.

“All you ever wanted to know about Royal Doulton Figurines!”

“An educated buyer is my best customer.”

Pottery in the image of human beings have been made since the dawn of civilization, and some impressive examples have survived from both Greek and Roman times. In the early 19thcentury early potteries started up in London, and in 1815 the Doulton & Watts factory was established on the banks of the River Thames. Various modelers worked throughout the years making various versions of Doulton’s Toby Jugs, but it was not until the 1870’s that the character jug came into its own, due to modeler Charles Noke. In 1889 he was appointed as modeler of ornamental vases, mainly for exhibition purposes. Before long, Noke was producing figure models and embarked on a mission to revive the Staffordshire figurative tradition. In 1913, Noke launched his famous HN collection of figurines. With the help of his chief modeler, Harry Fenton, Noke quickly introduced more personalities from literature, legend, folklore and song. Incidently, all Royal Doulton figurines are assigned an “HN” number, named after Harry Nixon (1886-1955), longtime head of the company.

Most prominent on the bottom of most figurines is the Royal Doulton trademark – a lion standing on a crown. Later “Made in England” was added, and in the 1930’s Royal Doulton started patenting their designs and added a registration number to the base as well.In the 1930’s, often the name of the character was added in quotes. A numbering code to determine the year of manufacture was started in 1928 with number one. If the number to the right of the lion/crown logo is present, it is added to 1927 to determine the year of manufacture, i.e the number 11 would denote 1938, etc. This marking is known for figurines made in the 1930’s & ‘40’s.

This “Orange Lady” has the “A” mark on the base. This is a kiln control mark denoting a special type of earthenware body known as “Georgian.” This mark was used on a variety of Royal Doulton products between 1939 and 1955, so its presence on a piece will date it to within that time period.

Once a piece has been discontinued in the Doulton catalog, it is only available on the secondary market. Many of the pieces have undergone modeling and color refinements. Many collectors feel the earlier pieces have more detail, and the original colors are more true to the artist’s conception.

Unlike most of the sparse descriptions offered in this category, you now know something about what you might purchase. Hopefully my research will help you make an informed decision about which of the many listings to choose from. I welcome any additions or corrections you might offer.
