VIEW OF THE HOT AIR BALLOON OF MR. SADLER\'S ASCENDING - RARE 1811 ORIGINAL PRINT:
$75.00

We are offering aRARE Original Lithograph\"A View of the Balloon of Mr. Sadler\'s Ascending with him and Captain Paget of the Royal Navy from the Gardens of the Mermaid Tavern at Hackney on Monday, August 12, 1811\". (11\" x 13 1/2\"). Information at bottom says, \"The Balloon ascended at 3 o\'clock in the afternoon and descended safe near Tilbury Fort in Essex at 20 minutes past four\". A cheering crowd had gathered to observe this historic flight, which was in honor of the Prince Regent\'s birthday. People were on the ground, looking out windows, on roof tops, on top of chimneys, on the roofs of carriages, and sitting on fences and any tall object they could find to give them a better view. The balloon is labeled with small letters which correspond to a key printed in the bottom corners that identify the different parts of the balloon and the two men inside. JAMES SADLER (1753-1828) was the first English aeronaut, who completed his first hot air balloon flight in 1784. He started out as a pastry chef in his family\'s business in Oxford, but later became a self-taught chemist and engineer. Due to his lack of formal education and class predjudice, not much credit was given to him and not much was written about him at the time. **NOTE:In our research, we have only seen one other lithograph of this particular view of the balloon ascending, which is in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. We have also found digital images of different views of the balloon, with the balloon already high up in the sky above the Tavern Gardens, showing no details of the people observing below which areGetty digital images and BBC News images that can only be viewed online.**CONDITION: Lithgraph is mounted on thin cardboard (which is brittle); a piece at the lower left edge had chipped off, but was repaired with acid-free archival mending tape. Print shows some toning, and has a damp stain in the bottom left margin.
