Own a piece of NASA history! This is a rare framed \"Space Shuttle STS-27\" Crew Signed Photo inscribed to \"Rockwell and subcontractor team.\" Signers are; Bill Shepard (Mission Specialist 3), Robert \"Hoot\" Gibson (Commander), Guy Gardner (Pilot), Richard \"Mike\" Mullane (Mission specialist 1) and Jerry Ross (Mission Specialist 2). NASA created this piece for the Rockwell team and included 2 patches and a pin from the mission. The original frame was broken leaving some scratches in the photo.
STS-27 was the 27th NASA Space Shuttle mission, and the third flightof Space Shuttle Atlantis. Launchingon 2 December 1988 on a four-day mission, it was the second shuttle flightafter the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster ofJanuary 1986. STS-27 carried a classified payload for the U.S. Department of Defense. Thevessel\'s heat shielding was substantially damaged during lift-off, impactingthe right wing. When Commander \'Hoot\' Gibson saw the damage, he thought tohimself, \"We are going to die.\" This was a situation that was similarto the one that would prove fatal 15 years later on STS-107, butthe damage that Atlantis had sustained happened to be survivable, and themission landed successfully, but the intense heat damage needed to be repaired.
