VERY RARE AMERICAN SHAKER MID to LATE 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN FOLK ART, ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE HAND DRILLED, AMERICAN WALNUT HARDWOOD SCHOOL PENCIL HOLDER, with FOOTED TOP & BOTTOM PLATES& SLENDER, TAPERED SHAKER HANDLE, for DISTRIBUTION ofWOOD & LEAD PENCILS to STUDENTS in a CLASSROOM by a TEACHER, UNTOUCHED & RECENTLY DISCOVERED[Discovered in an early rural estate in north-central Massachusetts, this exciting & simply extraordinary Shaker antique artifact is 100%, absolutely untouched. It hasn't been even dusted, let alone wiped down or moisturized with any kind of oil, organic or otherwise. Neither has some of the very slight damage to some of its corners, evidence it was previously used, been repaired, in order to disguise this barely noticeable damage. The piece appears not to have been made out of pine, a softwood, but rather realized from American walnut, a hardwood, ensuring the wooden pencil holder would last over time and not be debilitated & compromised by repeated handling. An incredibly rare & extremely scarce New England Shaker artifact, with the same spareness of design & conceptual austerity of form, we've come to expect when encountering mid to late 19th century Shaker design. Simply incredible that it's still with us. It has survived its 145 to 160 year journey until now, in order to plead with us to tell its story. Absolutely magnificent.
