VERY RARE Revolutionary War USA “1777” Continental Army Button - Dated “1777”:
$12000.00

This "USA 1777" Continental Army button represents a rare and historically significant artifact from the American Revolutionary War. With only about 20 of these buttons known to exist, they are exceedingly rare.

Their discovery has been confined to Valley Forge and Connecticut.

This scarcity, combined with the presence of three known variations, suggests a particular and limited use within the Continental Army. This particular button is an “AUSA.sa” variant, as referenced on pages 195-196 of Insignia of Independence.

Among Revolutionary War-era “USA” buttons, an already scarce artifact, the 1777 variant is the only known type to commemorate a specific date.

The metallurgic composition is visually consistent across all “1777” variants, indicating they were likely sourced from the same manufacturer and materials. The presence of miscasts and incomplete buttons recovered at Valley Forge, and considering their extremely limited numbers, there is a strong likelihood that Valley Forge is where they were all made. The exact composition is not known, but thought to contain lead, which explains how some of the buttons (such as this one) did so well in the ground.

This is considered to be one of the best examples of an AUSA.sa button in existence.

This particular AUSA.sa button was recovered in March 2023, in Connecticut, by seasoned metal detectorist, Michael B. Yormark. Mr. Yormark has worked with numerous Historical Societies and non-profits to recover artifacts and educate the public on metal detecting and local history.

The purchaser of this button will also receive a letter of provenance from Mr. Yormark.

Comps:

The first instance of a “USA 1777” button, sold publicly, occurred in the fall of 2023 by Heritage sales. The button that sold was an AUSAsaa variant which had a shank, but very little contrasting detail. It sold for $6,250. Link here: />
