MUSEUM QUALITY SPECIMEN

This is an extremely rare fossil leaf in a resin matrix. The 3/4 partial leaf is from the Eocene Period around 40 million years ago.It comes from the Messel Pit Quarry in Germany where over 1000 species of plants and animals have been found. It is one of the best fossil sites in the world for understanding the development of the first modern mammals. These fossils were discovered in oil shales which make for fragile fossils to extract. To help preserve the fossil, resin is mixed and covered over the fossil and once dried, the entire resin piece with the fossil gets removed. The fossil is removed as it was facing the earth. Messel Pit fossils are some of the best-known specimens with preserved organic matter. The Messel Pit has been closed to collecting for 30 years now, making private collection specimens very rare. This is quite the offering and possibly the only one like it in recent years and years to come.

It measures 3.125” x 3.625” and weighs 2oz. The leaf is 2.625” long and is in great condition. It has a hook attached on the back for hanging. The leaf appears black with no light behind it and with light shows magnificent organic Inventory
