VERY RARE & EARLY LARGE STAG HANDLED PISTOL GRIP

MAKER & G CROWN R HOT STAMPED SHEFFIELD SPORTSMAN'S

FOLDING POCKETKNIFE WITH A RARE SAW AND FISH SCALER BLADE

HAND MADE WITH EARLY INTEGRAL IRON BOLSTER & LINERS

CIRCA 1815 to 1820'S

This is a large Heavy Duty 11 1/4" long overall Sheffield folding Sportsman's knife with an unusual 5 3/8" saw tooth triangular shaped blade that can be used for sawing down small trees for shelter, cutting branches for firewood, clearing a camp site, as well as removing the scales from a fisherman's catch. This large all purpose knife is heavy for its size, and weighs a hefty 5.2 ounces or 150 grams. The ricasso is hot stamped G crown R, a regency mark that referred to King George IV before King William assumed the crown in 1830. The Maker mark is HURST. This piece is much larger and heavy duty than knives that were used for gardening, a common pastime of the period. The blade is an unusual triangular shape that has a ricasso that is about 1/4" thick, but immediately is ground thinly to around 1/16" thick for the entire sawtooth edge. However, the blade tapers from 1/16" thick at the teeth edge to about 1/32" thick at the tip edge; allowing the blade to be able to bend slightly to help it's functionality during sawing, yet remain remarkably strong. The blade also tapers from the ricasso from about 11/16" wide to about 1/4" wide at the tip, with a very unusual and ingenious notch at the blade end to lift the strong springed blade out of the hilt with a fingernail; thus eliminating a nail notch in the side of the thin blade that would have weakened the 1/32" thick blade top where you would normally find an opening nail nick. The saw teeth are hand ground in a triangular shape, with the points alternating from the left side and then to the right side of the blade when viewing the edge from the bottom, which is a very functional blade design that maximizes the efficiency of the blade. This blade would also make short order for a fisherman to remove the sales of his catch. The blade also has a 1/2 stop that keeps the blade in a rigid 90-degree angle to the handle if needed. There is no play in the bade forward and back ward or side to side in both the ½ stop; and open position. The pistol grip shape is a popular design motif from the late 1700's through about the 1820's. This piece has the rare and early feature of both Iron liners and also being integral with the Iron bolsters. This feature is found on 1700's knives, and continued to around the 1820's. The rat tail waisted bolsters are cut from a single piece of Iron, and the liners are ground down to about 1/32" thick in this same piece of Iron, making the Iron bolsters and liners one piece of Iron. Brass liners became in standard use in the 1830's, and bolsters were soldered in place and also secured by the Master blade pin. The knife is held together with 8 Iron pins; 3 large for the Master blade, back spring and pommel, and 5 small pins to secure the worn Stag scales to the liners, which demonstrate the attention to detail of a well-made, heavy-duty knife. All-natural material shrinks over time, and this is especially true of stag that is about 2 centuries old. The front side has one crack at the pommel pin, and another crack at this same pin on the back side. There is also a stable crack at the top of the back side, non-display side small Iron scale pin. There is also naturally occurring dark age patina around the pins created by moisture rusting the Iron pins and discoloring the stag.
This knife is old as dirt, and yet remains in fully functional condition with a very strong back spring after 200 years; a testament to Sheffield Cutlers. This would be a fine addition to any handmade knife collection, 1800s collection, Folk Art, pocketknife, Sheffield, , Object D' Art collection or use as a letter opener, desk accessory or conversation piece; and could still be carried and used by a Sportsman / Outdoorsman.
