$899.00

M1840 HEAVY CAVALRY SABER 1946 MFG. VERY EARLY N.P.AMES/CABOTVILLE -

This M1840 HEAVYCAVALRY SABER to use a much overused word-is Actually Rare.

THIS AMESM1840 is an Early 2nd Contract Production- In 1844, The FirstContract was placed for 2,000 M1840 sabersfrom Ames, with deliveries beginning in 1845, when 600 were delivered.Only 1,000 of the 1846 contract sabers were deliveredthat year;i.e., this Ames M1840 is one of the first 1,600 made, delivered & issuedby the ENDof 1846.

The odds this saber saw field use in The Mexican-American War (April 25th 1846 to February 2nd,1848) and The American Civil War areextremely probable.

When production ended on the M1840 in1858, a total of 21,700 US Model 1840 Sabers would be ordered from Ames in a total of nine contracts, and between 1845 and 1858 that number of sabers would be delivered.

The condition is as seen- now- Beloware the hands on feel & information:

All components of THIS M1840 are FIRM- the blade istotally un-pitted, un-chipped, Straight & True. The markings are excellent. This blade will show brilliantly & true if you wish to polish it.

1. The grip showssome original wire & trace leather- there is Zero rot to the grip. Allare Firm- The slight age seam/shrinkage split seen on the grip is again-age related only. This grip is Tight-Ready to be re-wrapped & wired as is.

2. While being wrapped & wired- the leatherwasher could be replaced as well.

3. The scabbarddoes show Surface Rust & Very LightPitting descending about 8-inches tothe chape - drag end. However, this is also firm and solid. This scabbard willbe an uncomplicated buff-outand restoration to original- if so desired.

4. The scabbardsuspension rings are solid & excellent, as is the throat- only one verysmall slight “ding” (i.e., slight enough not to rate as a “dent”) is foundapproximately 10-inches from the drag/foot inner side.

5. The guard: solid& tight showing some patina on outward facing section.

6.The Pommel: IS INTERESTING- Seen Beneath The Pommel Cap are Three setsof quality Large engraved initials-left side RO, top forward - RO and Right side RO. Or- they read “RC”- These letters are well worn. – POSSIBLE ConfederateRecovery MARKINGS-

7. Pommel Top: Is marked/stamped- but so faintly I can just discern one marking as a probable “MWP”or “NWP”- that my iPhone camera & lighting to do not show well-

8. Inspector Stampon blade “JH” is- John Hannis- U.S. Armory sub-inspector.

While “untouched” is alwayspreferred- (as this one is); There are perseveration options open here.

This IS a Rare & Early M1840and with its Superb Blade Condition & Wood Grip Solidity,preservation/polish/cleaning should be considered.

The 1840 models’ were originallymarked with N.P. Ames/Cabotville/date in the 1840s, followed by Ames Mfg. Co./Cabotville/date around 1847.

Model 1840 heavy cavalry saber witha 35 ½-inch curved blade stamped \"N. P. Ames / Cabotville / 1846\" onthe obverse side and \"US / JH\" on the reverse side. Brass hilt withwire-wrapped leather grips. Iron scabbard with two carrying rings.

The War with Mexico in 1846-8resulted in the acquisition of all of the southwest above the Rio Grande. Texashad previously accepted statehood in Feb 1846; although territorial boundariesremained in dispute until the Missouri compromise settlements of 1850.

Confederate ordnance inspector in the Confederate Cleaning andRecovery (“C&R”) service reissuing arms that had been, “captured andcollected.” The particular inspector has not been identified, but Steven Knott, who first identified and cataloged these markings in his 2019 “’Captured andCollected’ Confederate Reissued Firearms,” associates the mark with the RichmondArsenal/ Artillery Workshop based on the proportion of these stamps to othersand the number of guns passing through that facility. He estimated totalspassing through the system as whole at perhaps 200,000 from battlefields, mostly in the eastern theatre, where Lee’s victories left Confederates inpossession of the field, and another 50,000 or so turned in by CS units. Thesewent largely to CS facilities at Danville, Staunton, Lynchburg, and Richmond.Knott’s initial catalog of markings included the letters A, F, Q, T, and Z.This has been expanded slightly and includes an ampersand (&) stampindicating the letters need not correspond to an inspector’s initials.
