DETAILS: Original pinback button issued by the National Urban League (NUL). Circa 1966. Measures 1 1/4" inches. Rare.This particular NUL button is one of the very few examples of a Civil Rights group overtly seeking financial contributions in their political materials. Though African American civil rights groups asked for monetary donations from supporters, they rarely never did so in such an open overt fashion so as to avoid accusations of being motivated by monetary gain by their segregationist opponents. However with the arrival of the Black Power Movement (BPM)in1966, these norms temporarily were disregarded as some groups tried to push their message for financial support with greater candor and assertiveness.This button design was one such attempt.Notice how itcleverly incorporates a bright red"I" to create adollar symbolinto the word "support". It does not appear to have caught on as subsequent buttons, posters or leaflets by these civil rights groups discontinued the use such straightforward open request for money in their politicalmaterial.
