Date: 1894Condition: Notexamined out of frame butappearsastrongly printed impression with some age-toning in very good condition throughout. Notes: Apparently rare portrait of U.S. Grant in uniform by James Fagan, 1894 (probably after Ole Peter Hansen Balling\'s \'Grant and His Generals\' in the National Portrait Gallery) - no otherimages located via google search. Text below portrait reads: \"Copyrighted & Published 1894 by Chat Baumore, N.Y.\"
Biography:
James Fagan (American, 1864-1910)
James Fagan, born in 1864, was an American etcher who worked in a realistic style. One site lists the artist as a New York landscape artist but we was a bit more than that. He favored naturalistic scenes of everyday life like people milling about, men working, and families interacting. He did illustration work of a number of subjects. He also produced some images of the 1892-3 Chicago Worlds Fair. Fagan was also interested in classical subjects, choosing to depict heroes from Greece and Rome as well as people in robes and classical dress. A well traveled man, he also created scenes from places like Cuba and the Netherlands. Fagan died in 1918.
