Decent condition first edition cloth bound volumes published by Charles L Webster & Co, Vol 1 printed in 1885, Vol 2 in 1892. Dimensions of the later printing are slightly smaller. Books inscribed by owner ~1950 while an undergrad at Yale.
Volumes were written by President Grant in the last year of his life, at the urging of Mark Twain. Written in a clear, straightforward style, the years prior to the Civil War, and the moment by moment story of the Union Army during the Civil War comes alive without melodrama, yet its tragedy is told through the steady voice of an astute general who respected his fellow soldier on both sides of the conflict. Grant struggled to finish writing it, becoming ill with terminal throat cancer. He died a mere 5 days after sending in the manuscript. 300,000 copies of his memoirs were presold and it provided his family with desperately needed funds in the wake of his passing. Grant\'s funeral cortege was the longest ever seen for any US president.
These volumes contain facsimiles of Grant\'s correspondence, as well as the hastily written terms of surrender in full size. To me, it is as if Grant wanted every American to own a piece of this nation\'s history that these copies are included the way they are in these volumes. The newer editions do not make history come alive as this does. If you have a library, and you care about US history, these belong on your bookshelf.
Please check out the photos. Vol 1 has sustained some light staining on the bottom, and was handled more than Vol 2. Vol 2 has some foxing around the frontspiece, and the paper has yellowed a bit more, but the binding is excellent. A choice few lines in Vol 2 have been underlined in pencil, and it is done in a non distracting way.
