From the original dealer with regard to this specific weapon:
\"Very fine curving blade, natural steel color with some thin scattered dark gray/ black patches. Should clean to near new. Blade shows virtually no wear. Crisp markings \'US/P/LS/N STARR\' . Dark brown hilt of reverse \"P\" style. Still retains excellent dark brown leather grip. Minor surface crazing. Little edge wear. Excellent steel scabbard with most old black japanned surface (textured by underlying age). Not dented.\"
From The American Sword 1775-1945 by Harold Peterson, pages 30-31:\"On December 28, 1818, Decius Wadsworth, Colonel of Ordnance, signed a contract with Nathan Starr for 10,000 cavalry sabers. Since there was no cavalry in the Regular Army at that time, these sabers were all intended for arming the militia of the various states. The swords were completed and delivered between 1820 and 1822. Luther Sage inspected most of them, but Joseph Weatherhead and John Newbury inspected one parcel of 1,000 that was delivered in June 1821.The specimen specimen selected has a curved, single-edged blade with a clipped point and rudimentary false edge. There is a broad fuller running from a point near the hilt to within 6 inches of the tip, and this fuller is the characteristic by which this model is most quickly recognized. None of the other sabers made by Starr possess a broad one. The grips are wood covered with leather. There is an iron ferrule at the blade end of the grips, and there is a convex iron backstrap which surmounts the grips and covers the bird\'s head pommel. The knuckle-bow is iron. It is of the reverse \"P\" type and is pierced near the pommel for a sword knot. THe quillon terminates above the blade in a disc. All metal parts of the hilt were at one time japanned black. The scabbard is iron, japanned black, with two rings for suspension from belt slings. 37 inches overall, blade 32 inches by 1-1/4 inches wide at the hilt.\"
