US Army USMC Marine WW2 CATTARAUGUS 225Q \"COMMANDO\" FIGHTING KNIFE & SHEATH RARE:

Such was the need for fighting knives during WW2 that the US government purchased almost the entire production of most American cutlery companies. The Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. of Little Valley, NY produced a sturdy 6\" blade fighting knife known as the 225Q \"Commando\" that was widely carried by US troops overseas. This US Army USMC Marine WW2 CATTARAUGUS 225Q \"COMMANDO\" FIGHTING KNIFE is in good condition, with the original drop point blade tip having been ground down into more of a clip point, moderate sharpening and grinding to the blade edge, about 10 small chips and nicks along the upper blade edge, some cleaning, scratching, pitting, and spot patina at each side of the blade, some scattered patina to the guard, some patina to the pommel, two deep gouges having been cut into the left side of the handle, another gouge having been cut into the inner left side of the handle, all of which is actually quite common on these Catt. 225Qs, some believe it was factory done to improve grip, some scattered scratching and spot scuffing to the rest of the handle, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the knife is in fine shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it features a 6\" bright fullered blade,with the original drop point having been ground down into more of a clip point,sports the classic stacked leather washer handle, and is stamped at the ricasso with its maker and model, \"Cattaraugus / 225Q\". It boasts an oval steel guard and a stippled steel pommel, and is complete with the original US WW2 Cattaraugus 225Q \"Commando\" Brown Leather Scabbard in fair condition, with some drying and surface cracking along the top fold of the belt hanger, the handle retention strap (and thus the snaps) having been cut away long ago, a 3/8\" tear in the front left throat, most of the side stitching having torn away long ago, and thus the body now remains secured only by the metal rivets, some scuffing to the front and back end tip, moderate scattered wrinkling, darkening, drying, and crazing throughout, and with moderate overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the scabbard is in fair shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it bears the traditional metal rivets down the sides, carries an integral folded over belt hanger, and the set is a fine example of a rare, original US Army USMC Marine WW2 CATTARAUGUS 225Q \"COMMANDO\" FIGHTING KNIFE.We have shown a photo of a nearly identical Cattaraugus 225Q \"Commando\" fighting knife (#5) featured on page 541 of Bill Walters\' excellent reference work \"US and Allied Military Knives of World War II Book II\".
