The17th Aviation Groupwas activated inVietnamin December 1965 and became operational March 1, 1966. It assumed commandofthe10th, 14thand 52nd battalions in March 1966 and became part of 1stAviation Brigade in May 1966.The group was located atNhaTranguntil November 1970 when it moved toTuyHoa. II Corps terrain varied from coastal plains to mountains (Central Highlands). The 17th CAG had about 8,000 personnel. Late in the war, in 1972 the group provided intensive support to ARVN troops defending a major incursion by NVA tanks.The 17th supported mostly the 4th Infantry, the 198th Light Infantry Brigade, 173rd Airborne and 5th Special Forces, along with the Korean (ROK), the ARVN 22ndand 23rd Infantry Divisions
