UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS Binder Leather Embossed 3 Ring Pat’d 1923 RARE UT:
$12.00

I purchased this binder over 20 years ago from the estate of a small town Pharmacy that was in business for many years. The Pharmacist was a University of Texas alumni, and he kept hand-written prescription records in it, dating back several decades. This would make a great collectible that could easily still be used today.

This shield is divided into two fields. In the lower and larger field are the historic wreath and star of the Great Seal of the State of Texas; in the upper field is an open book, fit symbol of an institution of learning. The shield rests within a circle containing the motto, Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis. Around the disk is a larger disk bearing the words, "Seal of The University of Texas."

History of the Seal:

In October 1905, The Board of Regents ordered the University seal devised by Professor William James Battle and recommended by President Houston be adopted by the Board.

Civitas takes its name from The University of Texas at Austin motto, Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis, a condensed Latin rendering of Mirabeau Lamar's famous phrase that a “cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy.”

After he designed this seal, Professor William Battle described the motto as “at once the justification of the University’s existence and the ideal of its future.”

The motto, Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis, is the late Dr. Edwin W. Fay's terse Latin rendering of the famous quotation from Mirabeau B. Lamar, "Cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy."
