A Simplified Historical Overview Of The Sitting Writer

The statue of the scribe sitting or cross-legged is one of the famous works of ancient Egyptian art. It represents the figure of a writer sitting at work. The statue was discovered at Saqqara, north of the Sphinx Alley leading to the Serapeum of Saqqara, in 1850. It dates back to the Egyptian Kingdom period, from the Egyptian Fifth Dynasty circa 2450 - 2325 BC or the Egyptian Fourth Dynasty 2620 - 2500 BC. Many Egyptian kings and high-ranking officials would depict their servants in some form of portrait or sculpture so that when they went to the afterlife, they would be able to use their skills to help them in their second life. Scribes were among the few who could read and write, and were highly regarded and well paid. Most people were peasants who did not need to be literate, and “although some royals and high-ranking individuals, as well as officials, priests, and army officers were literate, scribes were needed for state operations at all levels.” Scribes were involved in many things related to daily Egyptian life, they were used as tax collectors and were responsible for organizing individuals for activities such as mining, trade and war. Scribes were also used to work on projects such as building the pyramids and helped in communication between the rulers and the Egyptian people.
