U.S.S.Niagara

War of 1812

Anactual piece of the historic War of 1812 U.S.S. Niagara!

The original U.S.S. Niagara, also known as the U.S. BrigNiagara, was constructed in 1812-13 at Presque Isle, Erie, Pennsylvania. Shewas built to help protect the American shoreline against a British invasionduring the War of 1812. Black oak logs were used in construction of the keel. Its 110 ft. length accommodated 18 x32 pound cannonades and 2 x12 pound longguns.

Oliver Hazard Perry assumed command of the Lake Erie fleetin 1813. On Sept. 10th the Battle of Lake Erie was underway againstthe British fleet. After several hours, Perry’s ship, the Lawrence, was out ofcommission and Perry lowered his battle flag with the now famous words – “Don’tGive Up The Ship” and boarded the Niagara as his new flagship. She opened fireand fought valiantly until the British fleet surrendered.

The War of 1812 ended with the Treaty of Ghent and the Niagara served as a receiving ship until1820 when she was sunk at Presque Isle for preservation. In 1913, thecentennial of the battle, she was raised and reconstructed. Much of theoriginal wood was not used in the rebuilding and was sold as souvenirs at thetime. Eventually, ownership of the Niagara was transferred to the PennsylvaniaHistorical Commission. She now serves proudly as a museum ship and is one ofonly 2 remaining ships from the War of 1812.

This small piece of wood in the Riker display case is fromthe original U.S.S. Niagara raised in 1913. It was cut from a larger pieceshown as an image on the display.

Nowyou have an opportunity to own an original relic from this historic U.S. Navalvessel!

The actual small wood relic is in a 5x6 inch Riker case andmeasures about 1 x 3/8 inch.

This wouldmake a very special gift for anyone interested in U.S. Naval history!
