Turin, ITALY - Giardini Piazza - Statuto Square - 1929: Turin is a city and an important business and cultural centre in northern Italy. It is the chief town of Piedmont, and of the Metropolitan City of Turin, and has been the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy, 1861 thru 1865. The city is located at the western bank of the Po River, and is surrounded, westward, by the Alpine arch, and eastward, by Superga Hill. The population of the sole city is 866,425 (31 August 2020) while the population of the urban area is estimated by Eurostat to be 1.7 million inhabitants. LOCATED ON THE WESTERN SIDE of Torino, Statuto Square was once home to a Roman necropolis, a French execution site, and was the scene of a terrible fire in 1983. The fountain in the middle of the square was constructed in the memory of the workers who died digging the Frejus Rail Tunnel. Due to its fatal legacy, the square has been given the title “Black Heart,” as Turin’s most obscure area. In the center of the fountain, a pyramid-shaped structure of stones stands with seven men who appear stuck, while attempting to scale the stone. At the top, a winged figure holds a feather in one hand and seems to keep the men at bay with the other. It’s believed the monument symbolizes the struggle and defeat of humankind in attempting to reach true knowledge. This Real Photo postcard mailed in 1929, is in good conditon. No. 184.
