He studied briefly at the Eighth Street School of Painting with Hans Hofmann, mentor to so many of the Abstract Expressionists, and hoped that he could earn a living from fine art. He couldn’t—very few painters could; few can today—and started earning money as an illustrator, at first with such unglamorous magazines as Gasoline Retailer. In the late 1950s, Levine’s work began to appear in Esquire; then, in 1963, in a fortuitous event for American culture, an Esquire editor recommended Levine to a founder of the New York Review of Books. (That publication was just being launched in the wake of a strike that shut down the New York Times—and its book review.)

The Brooklyn son of a garment-industry pattern cutter and a nurse with far-left sympathies, Levine’s political caricatures (he also drew famous literary figures, past and present) ran roughshod over the faces of establishment political figures, especially Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger.

On canvas and watercolor paper, however, Levine turned nostalgic. His small, Honoré Daumier-esque watercolor scenes of bathers and strollers at Coney Island and his larger oils of single figures (in this show, a pants presser and a standing bather) are more sweet than sharp. The contrast between Levine the caring painter and Levine the punishing cartoonist is emphasized by the presence of a wall of caricatures. Still, Levine was a selectively sentimental painter with a deft touch. This is a restful show.
