Author John Ham has established himself as the “Dean” of New York Central pictorial histories within New York state, having previously covered the mainline from New York City to Albany and Buffalo, the Harlem Division, Adirondack Division, the West Shore, and the Ulster & Delaware. In this book, Ham tackles the Boston & Albany, its branches, Boston commuter zone, and connections with other railroads.Ham decided to focus this book on the Boston & Albany\'s steam era \"Glory Years\", relying heavily on the scenes taken in the Berkshires. He was able to obtain a multitude of quality steam and early diesel photos that were taken over the years by some of the most noted rail photographers of that period.Over 120 station locations are presented along with trackside industries, and small town views. Ham’s books are always full of contributions from a diverse group of collectors, photographers, and railroad historians. More than 600 photographs grace 336 pages, including a color section.Many of their original negatives and prints have been graciously loaned for use in this book by different historical societies, New England towns & city archives and well known collectors.

One of the most important sections is the crossing of the Berkshires in western Massachusetts. All of the B&A’s branches are detailed, such as North Adams, Athol, Ware River, Webster, and many more.
