Thomas Jefferson, 1801 Important Autographed Letter Signed - Pres. Appointments :
$35000.00

Thomas Jefferson(1743-1826) autographed letter, signed Thomas Jefferson as president to William Keteltas (1765-1812) , Washington, July 17th. 1801 This letter by Thomas Jefferson is in response to the enclosed letter from William Ketaltas who expresses his opinion about Mr. Gelstons general character and reputation and expresses that he would prefer to see several other candidates replace Mr. Sands as the collector of the port of New York, a very powerful and prestigious position . This letter by Thomas Jefferson is viewed by historians as precedent for political appointments. Although political appointments had been made before Jefferson, this document is viewed due to the fact that Jefferson expresses in his response, that you must judge a man by the totality of his character, not just one misdeed and that’s what makes this letter so valuable and important in the history of political appointments for all future presidents. In the pictures you can read that on July 17, 1801 Thomas Jefferson wrote.Keteltas thanking him “ for sentiments and information“ contained in his letter of July 4. Thomas Jefferson observed that “no more welcome service can be rendered“ than that of supplying information on those being considered for office. The president noted that he had to rely on the opinions and judgments of others to make his choices. He confided in Keteltas : “ I always wish to have information from different quarters, and from a view of the hole to form the best judgment I can”. The president reiterated his thanks to the New York attorney and assured him of his “high consideration and respect“ in conclusion, you have a rare opportunity to own an amazing piece of American history. I purchased this document from Christie’s sale house and will supply the buyer with the original documentation of the purchase upon the sale of the document I have been a member of for over 16 years and I’ve always maintained a 100% approval rating on all purchases and sales. I collect American historical documents such as this one very old books, coins, and several other things you can check my approval rating and you can check my response. Thank you very much and enjoy your day. The document measures 8“ x 6 1/4“.
