From his memorial

Son of Daniel and Anna Margaret Roth. Changed last name from Roth to Rhoads. Married first to Sabina Kohler 1744-1785. They were parents of four children who died young: a son in 1764, Elizabeth 1767-1768, Adam 1775-1775 and Daniel 1783-1783; four children reached adulthood: George 1769-1851, Peter, John 1773-1851, and Catherine. Married second to his first wife's sister, Catherine Kohler Miller, widow of John Miller, d. 1825.

Reared among the Quakers, Peter received a good education and changed the spelling of his name to Rhoads. He settled in Allentown in 1762 and was a local storekeeper, a member of the Constitutional Convention of July 15th, 1776, a member of the Committee of Safety in 1776 and a member of the Assembly from 1777 to 1781. On Oct. 8th, 1784, he was commissioned President Judge of the Courts of Northampton County by the Supreme Executive Council, and was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1790, and in 1791 was commissioned Associate Judge, which office he held until the erection of Lehigh County in 1812, when he was commissioned Senior Associate Judge in Lehigh County.

Judge Rhoads died at his residence in Allentown on Sunday evening, December 18, 1814, at nine o’clock, at the age of 77 years and 8 months. He was buried the following Wednesday, in the cemetery at Tenth and Linden streets.

The Gazette of the United States was an early American newspaper, first issued on April 15, 1789, that was friendly to the Federalist Party. Founded by John Fenno, it was intended to unify the country under its new government. As the leading Federalist newspaper of the 1780s and 1790s, it praised the Washington administration and its policies. Its Federalist sponsors, chiefly Alexander Hamilton,[1] granted it substantial funding, semi-official status, and documents to print. The influence of the newspaper inspired the creation of the National Gazette, a rival that supported the Democratic-Republican cause. Although its influence declined around the turn of the century, the Gazette of the United States continued to print under different editors until its last issue on March 7, 1818.
