Catharine Merrill (1824-1900) was an educator who served roughly four years in the Civil War as a nurse in Indiana and Kentucky. Returning from the War, Merrill became the second female university professor in the country when she accepted a position at North Western Christian University (now Butler University). Later in her career, she wrote The Soldier of Indiana in the War for the Union at the request of Indiana Governor Oliver P. Morton. The book documented the experiences of soldiers during the war, but was published anonymously to preserve her modesty and maintain focus on the soldiers and their sacrifices.

Throughout history, there have been those who achieve greatness through notoriety about the feats they accomplish or heights they attain in society or in their professions. There are also people who achieve greatness by proceeding quietly through life, using their work to lay the foundation for generations to come. Catharine Merrill, the second female professor in the United States, was one such person. Merrill\'s friend, noted naturalist John Muir, described her as \"tall, rather frail looking, with broad brow and wonderful eyes, a countenance glowing with kindness and as free from guile as a child\'s,\" and stated that she was \"an admirable scholar, with perfect mental independence.\" With these attributes but without obviously aiming to, Merrill pioneered a professional life in education that would benefit women for years to come.

John Muir met Catharine Merrill when he first lived in Indianapolis, introduced by Professor J.D. Butler, one of Muir\'s professors at the University of Wisconsin. He called Merrill\'s gifts \"rare,\" credited her with being a \"builder of character\" and observed that to know her \"was a liberal education.\"
