The Sands Hotel and Casino operated in Las Vegas Nevada from 1952 - 1996. Many famous entertainers such as Frand Sinatra have performed at the Sands over the years. Howard Hughs bought the hotel in the mid 1960s. Hughs became annoyed at Frank Sinatra (who was the star attraction at the hotel) due to Hughs' and Sinatra's competing love interest in actress Ava Gardner. The Sands fell out of favor with the Las Vegas crowd in the 1990's and the hotel closed in June, 1996. In November of that year, the Sands was demolished. In its place, the Venetian Hotel was built and opened for business in 1999.
This is an unusual Sands ashtray in that it is square in configuration with beveled corners.Made from clear glass with yellow Sands Hotel screen printed on bottom, this ashtray is a fitting tribute to the iconic hotel casino from yesterday.
