The Napoleon Museum by John A. Sainsbury. Very large hardcover book containing 692 pages, measuring 12" x 14 3/4" and weighing 13 1/2 lbs. Privately printed in 1845.Scarce book of the extraordinary collection of memorabilia, artworks and materials relating to Napoleon and French history after Louis XIV, assembled by the Napoleonic sympathizer John Sainsbury and exhibited in the early 1840s in London at his 'Napoleon Museum'. While personal relics of Napoleon were few, there was an imposing inventory of State Papers and Manuscripts, Marbles, Bronzes, Carvings, Gems, Decorations, Medallions, Drawings, Miniatures, Portraits, Pictures, Prints, Vignettes, Coins, Medals, Books, etc . The Duke of Wellington came to the show and expressed his "surprise and satisfaction" and his intention of paying a return visit. Sainsbury claimed to have spent over £40,000 on his collection and ended up in financial distress- the collection was dispersed at sale realizing only a tiny fraction of what he had paid.
