The first building of the MET was constructed in 1880 according to the designs of Calvet Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould in the high Victorian style. Theodore Weston and Arthur Lyman Tuckerman added two more wings from 1888-94. The main entrance at that time was not on Fifth Avenue, but on the south side of the building in Central Park. In 1902 Richard Morris Hunt's designs for the classical east wing were executed, including the Great Hall and the current entrance on Fifth Avenue. The essential appearance of the facade dates to this period, though the Museum has expanded in many directions since then.

This MET box depicts the Museum as it stood with Hunt's newly completed facade facing Fifth Avenue, and Weston's south wing behind it in Central Park. The box is copper with an antiqued bezel.
