Given Campbell of Kentucky was traced from his ante-bellum days to the establishment of his New Orleans law practice shortly after the Civil War ended. It contained his two personal war diaries plus the correspondence of military significance during the period 1861-1866. Together, they painted a picture of the soldier, son, husband, and lawyer who played such a pivotal role in the attempted escape of Jefferson Davis after the fall ofRichmond.
In the present volume, the post war years are thoroughly analyzed as GivenCampbell and his wife Sue Bettie Woods build a life torn apart by war, raise a family through necessary separations, and establish themselves in society. All of the correspondence included has never before been published and paints a fascinating picture of the years of reconstruction, the post war South, New Orleans society, and the struggles of a Confederate hero in a society he wished was different. Everything from medical remedies of the 19th Century to wages, servant problems, and the Mardi Gras are seen by the reader as a participant, for the letters are transcribed in their original with all grammatical errors included so as not to alter the emotions, thoughts, and expressions of those who lived these years.
