From The Atlanta Americana in Atlanta, Georgia. Room #359. The address is 160 Ted Turner Drive NW (it was originally named SpringStreet). The postal codes (Atlanta 1) were instituted in 1943during WWII. They were needed because many postal clerks had joined the serviceand the inexperienced postal clerks had problems sorting the mail. The zonesystem was put in place to make things easier. The postal codes were replaced by zip codes on July 1,1963. This key and fob are prior to zip codes so this item is earlier than 1963. It originally opened as the Americana Motor Hotel in 1962(with a room rate of $13.93 per night) with 102 rooms. It cost around $3million to build and featured restaurants, a swimming pool, andstate-of-the-art technology. What didn’t it have? Drinking fountains. City lawrequired that all drinking fountains remain segregated, so the Americana’sowners elected to forgo them altogether. The property was reportedly the first integrated lodgingoption in Atlanta. Even more interesting: The hotel is cited as playing a keyrole in the decision of the Braves to relocate from Milwaukee to Atlanta in1966, as MLB required cities to have integrated accommodation for travelingteams, according to the Saporta Report. The move was approved in October 1964. The hotel played an integral part in the Civil RightsMovement, welcoming all guests as the premier hotel in Atlanta. This hotelhosted notable public figures such as Elvis Presley, Carol Channing, JimmyCarter, James Brown, Nelson Rockefeller, President Richard Nixon, Dr. MartinLuther King Jr. and others. After many renovations and name changes that saw theAmericana become a Best Western, Wyndham and Marriott, the 312-room hotel nowis a DoubleTree by Hilton.
