I bought this for my collection of 3-D politicalmaterial in the late 1990s from a collector of New York city photographs whoattributed the piece to the TR 1910 Welcome Back from Africa celebration. Sincethen, though, I have never found anything similar in political sales, shows,club periodicals or reference books so I can’t guarantee the connection.

While obviously not the much heavier ratchet-stylednoisemakers associated in American political campaigns, it is however, verysimilar to the virtually identically constructed much smaller wooden noveltynoisemakers made inthe early 20th century prior to WW I marked Germanytypically found with images or figures of Halloween subjects such as bats,devils, witches, etc.

In researching TR’s return from Africa, I foundthat he travelled from Europe to New York on the German Hamburg America Line oceanliner Kaiserin Auguste Victoria. Maybe the German-made noisemakers were giveawaysfrom the American New York office of Hamburg America Lines?
