Artists comments on his picture

For most West Midlander\'s holidays and day-trips in post-war Britain usually meant Wales, and although the artist can remember a few sunny days at Rhyl, with an endless procession of Black 5 hauled excursions, it mostly rained. The adventures of a car-borne youth carried him further afield and he discovered Wales and its mountains. The Cader Idris was one; it terrified him, looming above Talyllyn, head in the clouds, a fearsome primeval bulk to be respected at all times. The Cambrian line was unknown to the artist until 1985 when he enjoyed a pottering DMU ride along the coast to Barmouth and visited the location depicted with the mountain presenting its western edges in an unforgettable backdrop. It is one thing to enthuse over a potential painting from studied photographs in the complacency of our armchairs, but how necessary and 1 fulfilling it is to savour the subject first hand. How comfortably railways seem to blend into the landscape - another statement of nostalgia, perhaps, but even now one tends to invoke the spirit of Ruskin when a rural idyll is threatened by any modern infrastructure. Will we ever tire of the dependable ingredients that a landscape view presents? Even the clichés are essential and evergreen. This painting, which shows a typical 1930s train hauled by a Duke and an Earl, is but a brief study of the story.
