Autograph Document Signed: "Timothy/Pickering" in text, 1p, 8x4¼. No place, 1783 February 8. In full: "Received of Timothy Pickering QMG p D Wolfe Twenty one dollars and eighty four and a half ninetieths in full for Carting Clothing and wood as p voucher havg Signd duplicates." Pickering wrote this for William Swart's "mark" which he has signed: "X". Witnessed by: "Peter Anspach". In 1792, 24 prominent brokers and merchants gathered on Wall Street to sign the Buttonwood Agreement, agreeing to trade securities on a common commission basis. PETER ANSPACH, was one of the original signers who met on Wall Street in 1792 to sign the Buttonwood Agreement, agreeing to trade securities on a common commission basis. The New York Stock Exchange traces its beginnings to this historic pact. He was paymaster and commisioner to the Quartermaster General's Department. TIMOTHY PICKERING was Quarter Master General of the Army from 1780-1783. He was Washington's Postmaster General (1791-1795), Secretary of War (1795) and Secretary of State (1795-1800), serving into the Adams administration. Lightly creased. Nicked at left edge. Tape stain at lower blank right margin. Irregular lower edge.
