The Virgin and St. John the Baptist appear alongside the Blessing Jesus Christ and intercede for the salvation of humanity. The composition of these three icons was very common in Eastern Christianity: it was referred to as Deësis, a Greek term that means supplication, intercession.
These Three Iconsmeasure 15 1/2 inches in height , by 6 1/4 inches in width, by 1 inch in depth.Being sold as a set of three.
The condition is commensurate with age, dating to the Mid 20th century.A superb example of a very distinctive style of Russian art, it would make a fine collector’s prize to have all three.- Handmade:
Materials: punic wax varnish, egg tempera, natural pigments, gold leaves The three icons show full height figure Deesis - Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, John the Baptist The Deeisis - from Greek \"prayer\" or \"supplication\". Composition of the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist standing on either side of Jesus Christ and symbolizing their intercessionof behalf of mankind. The iconography of this Deesis is inspired by Georgian frescoes and icons.
