In 1783, after seeinga letter made by John Adams usinga verylarge Letterpress in England, Jefferson ordered such a machine for himself. He then invented a smaller Letterpress for himself that he could use when he traveled. However, he was never happy with the very thin paper that had to be used and over time, the ink would \"blur\" and run, as we can see in the document.
