Published over the course of three years between 2006 and 2009, Archaia Studios Press' translated series of the French graphic novel The Killer was a riveting, highly focused hard-boiled noir thriller and deep, introspective character study that told the story of a professional hit-man - a man of few scruples, nerves of steel and a steady trigger finger whose crimes were slowly catching up with him and he was on the verge of cracking. The series suffered from several different publication problems, at one point causing over a 12-month delay between issues, and while the delays artificially seemed to affect the series' pace, the uniqueness of The Killer's attention to its subject matter maintained its uniqueness among more standard American comic book story-telling.
Even as Archaia's adaptation of The Killer was suffering its publication delays, Paramount Pictures had obtained the rights to The Killer in 2007 with plans to develop it into a feature film, with director David Fincher signed on as director. The film lingered in development for the next 14 years, until 2021, when Fincher took the IP to Netflix, bringing both a new writer and his leading actor, Michael Fassbender with him. In just over two years, Fincher's film was complete, and The Killer premiered in September 2023 at the 80th Annual Film Festival in Venice, Italy, before coming to Netflix two months later (November, 2023).
While the story of the film differs to some degree from its graphic storytelling origins, Fincher and Fassbender both capture the series' most unique aspects and skillfully translate them to the new genre. Most definitely a story meant for Mature Readers and Viewers, fans of The Killer, whether on the screen or on the page, will almost certainly enjoy the story in both mediums, if not have their experience augmented and enriched.
