Clarence LaVaughn Franklin(bornClarence LaVaughn Walker; January 22,1915 – July 27, 1984) was anAmericanBaptistministerandcivil rights activist. Known as the man with the\"Million-Dollar Voice\", Franklin served as the pastor ofNew Bethel Baptist ChurchinDetroit,Michigan, from 1946 until his retirement in 1979.Franklin was also the father of American singer–songwriterAretha Franklin.

Hewas born Clarence LaVaughn Walker inSunflower County, Mississippi, to sharecroppers Willie and Rachel (née Pittman) Walker.C.L. Franklin would recall that the onlything his father did for him was to teach him to salute when he returned fromservice inWorld War Iin1919.Willie Walker abandoned the family whenClarence was four years old. The next year Rachel married Henry Franklin, whosesurname the family adopted.

Atage 16, he became a preacher, initially working the Blackitinerant preachingcircuit, before settling atNew Salem Baptist Church inMemphis, Tennessee, where he remained until May 1944. From there he moved to thepulpit of the Friendship Baptist Church inBuffalo, New York,where he served until June 1946 when hebecame pastor of theNew Bethel Baptist ChurchinDetroit.Throughout the late 1940s and 1950s his famegrew. He preached throughout the country while maintaining his pulpit at NewBethel. Known as the man with the \"Million Dollar Voice\",Franklin had many of his sermonsrecorded (which continued into the 1970s, many of them issued byJoe Von Battle\'s JVB label), and to broadcast sermonsviaradioon Sundays.[8]He commanded high fees (for the time)for his public appearances, up to $4000 per appearance.

Amonghis most famoussermonswere\"The Eagle Stirreth Her Nest\" and \"Dry Bones in theValley\". In 2011, \"The Eagle Stirreth Her Nest\" was added totheNational Recording Registryof theLibrary of Congress.Selected sermons are published in avolume edited by theUniversity ofIllinois Press.Franklin was also known for his singingvoice, and a style of preaching that segued organically into song; he alsoencouraged his daughterAretha Franklinin her musical endeavors. During the1950s he took her with him on speaking tours and musical engagements and formedana cappellagroupwith Anthony Alexander Chamblee, his first cousin. They only made one albumbefore he accepted the call to preach.

Inthe 1950s and 1960s he became involved in thecivil rights movement, and worked to end discriminatory practices against blackUnited Auto Workersmembers in Detroit.Franklin was a friend and supporterofMartin Luther King Jr.He helped to lead Dr. King\'s freedom marchdown Woodward Avenue in Detroit in June 1963.

Assault, death and legacy.

Shortlyafter midnight on Sunday, June 10, 1979, Franklin was shot twice atpoint-blankrange during what was believed to havebeen an attempted robbery at hishomeon Detroit\'s West Side. He was taken toHenry Ford Hospitalon nearbyWest Grand Boulevard. He remained in a coma for the next five years.

TheFranklin children moved him back to his house six months after the shooting; hereceived 24-hour nursing care and remained at home until the middle of 1984. Hedied on July 27, 1984, aged 69, in Detroit\'s New Light Nursing Home.Franklin was entombed at Detroit\'sWoodlawn Cemeteryon North Woodward Avenue.Franklin\'s friend, the Rev. JasperWilliams Jr., of the Salem Bible Church ofAtlanta, Georgia, gave theeulogy.

Personal life.

OnOctober 16, 1934, Franklin married his first wife, Alene Gaines, and thoughthat marriage had ended by early 1936, theformof dissolution is unconfirmed. On June 3, 1936, FranklinmarriedBarbara Siggers, with whom he had four children:Erma(1938–2002), Cecil (1940–1989),Aretha(1942–2018), andCarolyn(1944–1988).

Barbarahad a son by a previous relationship, Vaughn (1934–2002), whom C. L. adoptedshortly after the marriage. Vaughn did not learn that C. L. Franklin was nothis father until 1951.In 1940, Franklin fathered a daughter,Carol Ellan Kelley (née Jennings), by Mildred Jennings, a 12-year-old girl inhis New Salem Baptist Church congregation. (She gave birth to Carol Ellanseveral days after her thirteenth birthday.)In 1948, C.L. and Barbara separated forthe last time, with Barbara moving with Vaughn toBuffalo, New York, and leaving Franklin with the couple\'s fourother children. The couple never divorced.According to a biographer,Nick SalvatoreofCornell University, Barbara made periodic trips to Detroit to visit her childrenand the children traveled to New York to visit her during summer vacations.Barbara died of a heart attack in 1952at the age of 34. Her husband did not attend her funeral....
