Nice, unused set of Wilton ‘Armetale’, pewter-like dishes from the 1970s. Some with a slightly darker patina than others, just from whatever order they were stacked in during 40-50 years of storage but otherwise in excellent clean condition.‘Armetale’ is a proprietary metal developed by Wilton in the 1960s to compete with softer metal dinner and tableware such as copper and pewter. It’s a far superior oven-table metal and perfectly safe to eat from. Additionally it keeps hot food hotter and cold food colder and is dishwasher safe, though not recommended due to undue staining from harsh detergents overtime but does not detract from functionality. Also not for use in microwaves, otherwise exceptionally versatile.These shell dishes, approximately 5” in diameter are frequently considered ash trays, however they can be used for any purpose where a small dish is called for such as bathroom, trinkets or jewelry, obviously hors d’ouvres, or kitchen ( a small fork or spoon rests perfectly in the notch) even nuts and bolts in the garage - the possibilities are endless. They even look fabulous as decorative items on display and could be adapted for wall hanging.
