TACOMA WASHINGTON HARBOR, PUGET SOUND, Lumber Vessels, Central News, Tacoma 1906:
$11.99

Tacoma is the county seat of Pierce County,Washington, a port city situated along Washington’s Puget Sound on CommencementBay, 32 miles southwest of Seattle, 31 miles northeast of the statecapital, Olympia, and 58 miles northwest of Mount Rainier National Park. It serves as the center of business activityfor the South Sound region. Thearea was inhabited for thousands of years by Native Americans, mostrecently the Puyallup People, who lived in settlements on thedelta.

In 1864, pioneer and postmaster JobCarr built a cabin. He hoped toprofit from the selection of Commencement Bay as the terminus of the “TranscontinentalRailroad” but sold most of his claim to developer Morton McCarverwho named his project “Tacoma City”, derived from the indigenous namefor the mountain. Tacoma wasincorporated in 1875, following its selection in 1873 as the western terminusof the “Northern Pacific Railroad”.The transcontinental link was completed in 1887, and the population grewfrom 1,098 in 1880 to 36,006 in 1890 but discovery of gold in the Klondike in1898 led to Tacoma’s prominence in the region being eclipsed by the developmentof Seattle.

Being on Commencement Bay,part of Puget Sound, Tacoma is a deep-water port and was anearlycenter of commerce. This is a card published by the “Central News Co.”which was located in Philadelphia with Tacoma as one of their regional branches. The card is a UDB, posted 1906 with the imageof “Loading Lumber Vessels, Tacoma Washington” and is in goodcondition with some soiling of the image and reverse, a dog eared lower rightcorner but generally minor wear overall and is presentable. It is a great historic picture of mastedships at the dock with a message on the front.
