Very rare, Vintage Swiss Music Box-Girl in Rocking Chair at Fireplace Reads to Baby in her Arms as She Twirls to Tune, \"Scarlett Ribbons\" .VIDEO with SOUND: From Switzerland, the Anri Thorens music boxes are acknowledged as the best ever made and this is certainly a good example.Beautifully hand carved and painted with amazing detail, this music box winds at the side and has a shut-off kniob near the winder. It is large, at about 8” tall and 7\" wide. One of the sweetest music boxes you will ever see and hear features a beautifully dressed girl with a scarlett ribbon in her hair. She is sitting in a decorated blue rocking chair near a large warm fireplace reading to a sweet baby in her arms. Near her, two dogs attentively look on and listen in. Note that this 50 to 60 year old music box still has the red Thorens authentication tag on the winder.
A perfect gift for a new mother or a baby shower; or, a very nice addition to your music box collection.
ABOUT THE TUNE:The \"Scarlet Ribbons\"tune was written in only 15 minutes in 1949 at Evelyn Danzig\'s home in Port Washington, New York after she invited lyricist, Jack Segal to hear her music. First recorded by Harry Belefonte in 1956 the song tells a miraculous tale: the singer (who could be a mother or a father) peeks into their daughter\'s bedroom to say goodnight and hears the daughter praying for \"scarlet ribbons for my hair\". It is late, no stores are open in the town, and there is nowhere to obtain any ribbons. The singer\'s heart \"is aching\" throughout the night but when at dawn they again peek into the daughter\'s bedroom they see lovely \"scarlet ribbons\" in \"gay profusion lying there.\" The singer says that if they live to be two hundred (or, in some versions of the song, a hundred), they will never know from where the ribbons came.
