This sale is a stunning example of an iridescent ammonite fossil of the speciesCaloceras johnstonifrom North Somerset, UK.
The piece of limestone matrix measures 130 mm (5.12 inches) tall and contains an ammonite that measures 98 mm, which is very large for this species, is well preserved and has been prepared out of the rock to reveal the shell, which displays some stunning iridescence with the colours changing as the angle the fossil is viewed at changes. The dominant colours are red and orange.These colours change their hues between natural and artificial light (see photos).The fossil weighs 185 grams and has a cut-flat base and bespoke rock-coloured plaster wedge on the base to allow it to stand freely for display. It was found in two pieces and has been carefully repaired back together.
These fossils are highly sought after and hard to find. They are preserved in the same way as the famous Canadian \"Ammolite\" ammonites that are turned into valuable gemstones.
Around 200 million years old (Hettangian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
