Stunning Table with Human Griffin / Centaur Carved Stands Possibly Masonic c1850:
$2126.28

Hi, Selling this absolutely stunning one off Table with stunning carving. I know very little about furniture but fell in love with this instantly as it is truly breath taking and I have never quite seen anything like it. It needed to be restored and brought back to its former glory, so i took it straight from where i bought it to a local restorer who has restored over the last 5 months. It was advertised as a jardiniere table and i picked it up in its 3 parts and didnt realise its height. I would call it more of a centre table as you need to view the whole thing as its a work of art in itself. I believe its carved Oak and the restorer i used believed it dated to circa 1850\'s and he also thought because of some of the patterns it was some sort of masonic piece. Possibly used for presentations or other Masonic rituals. I bought this to keep but it just looks out of place in my small front room and just too big and too high, It just does not do the piece justice. It comes in 3 parts, the main base with the stunning carved pieces, then a piece sits on top of the carvings with a rail going around and then the table top sits on a lip on the rail which isnt a tight fit but completely original to the piece. The carved figures have winged lion (Griffin) bodies and wings but then human heads but on a more closer look it could be a centaurs body. Its also highly carved all the way around and it upsets me a little i do not have the right words to describe this as it needs. The table has been restored by Ian Zabrocki whose family has been furniture restorers for at least a century. It needed pieces re attaching and some smaller pieces carved to complete the piece. It looks the part and ready to go but again i know very little about furniture. The table base measures about 43\" in length, about 31\" at its widest and total height about 30\". The table top measures about 33.25\" in length and just over 20\" in total width. **The base is very heavy and needs 2 people to lift and As such Collection only or you could contact Newcastle MBE or any other couriers to collect and pack at the buyers cost but i will help as much as i can to help facilitate this. I have added a postage cost but please ignore this as its a complete guess.**

A very helpful er, took the time to send me thier thoughts on this stunning piece and as I don\'t know much about it, will add the messages. Please feel free to let me know your thoughts if anyone knows anything about the table.

Hi there, love this piece. Been staring at it for days. I am unfortunately too far away (west coast of the US). Apologies but just couldn\'t help but offer some thoughts on it as it is such a treasure. I am a collector of 17th-19th century furniture and was so fascinated to see this. Like you note, the table is likely from around 1850. The figures in the base are a sphinx and an androsphinx. The table is likely inspired by artworks like the \"Farnese Table\", now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, but which was owned in the mid-19th century by the Duke of Hamilton. The base is really exceptionally well-carved, far better than most fine renaissance-revival furniture of the mid-19th century. The carving of the figures is really spectacular and this would have been done by a furniture maker of the highest quality. The 2 pieces on the top appear to actually be from some other pieces of furniture, likely from the same period, but they are not of the same quality as the base (the base is just phenomenal) and their decoration is different. If you look at the base, with the top pieces removed, you will see that the heads of the figures have wide flat sections that are meant to support wider components that would have originally supported another top. The original top was likely wider than the base. You might consider removing the top sections actually, because the base is really so special on its own. Probably the best outcome here would be for a dealer to buy this and have a new top made. A little suggestion, you might also consider photographing this with some optimal lighting (maybe even outdoors) without flash to really get people to see it most clearly (selfishly, I would love to see the base photographed on its own in optimal light). Anyhow, what a great treasure. Thanks for showing it!

Hi there, yes please include whatever info is useful. A really interesting part of this table is that the support sections are just the 2 figures and that’s super rare in renaissance style tables and I’m trying to find a similar one because it’s piqued my curiosity. Usually renaissance tables don’t have a flat base and instead are supported by columns/legs or trestles. I’m super curious about finding others like this, just supported on 2 recumbent figures, but I’ve found no others. I also imagine this piece’s original top may have broken off due to the figures not having a lot of real load-bearing capacity (while still be really beautiful), it’s a really fascinating piece

As you can see from my Excellent 100% response, I am an honest seller.
