Akhenaten also spelled Akhenaten; meaning \"the living soul of the Aten\") was also known before the fifth year of his reign as Amenhotep IV. He was a pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty who ruled Egypt for 17 years and died probably in 1336 BC or 1334 BC. He is noted for abandoning the plurality of traditional Egyptian deities and introducing a new cult centered on the Aten, which is sometimes described as a monotheistic or henotheistic religion. Early inscriptions represent Aton with the sun, compared to the stars, and later the official language avoided calling Aten a god, giving him solar divinity a higher status than just being a god.
Akhenaten tried to effect a break with traditional religion, but in the end it was not accepted. After his death, traditional religious practice was gradually restored, and after a few years some rulers who were not without clear rights of succession from the Eighteenth Dynasty established a new dynasty, and tarnished the reputation of Akhenaten and his successors, referring to Akhenaten himself as \"the enemy\" in archival records.
