Here is a Stanley No 48 tongue and groove plane. Because of the \"B\" foundry marks in the castings, we can date the manufacture of this plane to circa 1911-14. During this time Stanley was so overwhelmed they farmed out some of their casting to other foundries to keep up with demand. No one seems to be very sure who \"B\" was.
The plane was missing almost all of its nickel when it came to me, and the corrosion around the spring and locking bolt was so bad that I wasn\'t sure I could restore it. I soaked the nose in diesel and after 2 days the locking bolt started moving a little, but once I got it free and moving, the spring and cotter pin essentially dissolved. It has a new, stainless steel spring and a new 1/16\" stainless cotter pin. I cleaned the locking bolt and original washer and replated them as well.
The replate went beautifully, and I was really impressed with how the old steel took the nickel, but I did give it an extra good cleaning before going into the tank. As corroded and ruined as the old spring was, it was amazing that the pivot screw broke easily and is in as good condition as the day the plane was assembled. It has a smooth, clean action.
The pitting on the fence is unfortunate, and as I tried cutting tongues and grooves, the plane fights you a bit on the stroke, and the joints don\'t mate just right. It makes a great display piece, but finding a new fence might make all of the working difference.
