Among the less common Stanley smooth planes, this beauty is about the length of a No.4, but has the cutter width of a No.6 Fore plane. The corrugated sole is said to reduce friction, making it easier to push through the work. This size plane was more popular in England than here in the USA where it was made. This plane came to me nicely cleaned with a protective layer of sealer on the metal, but shows evidence of light pitting on the sole. The rosewood is beautiful, clean, and sealed, but shows some abraded spots from use or poor care earlier in its long life. No cracks, splits, or repairs in the rosewood knob, but a small gouge out of the right side of the tote near the top and a well hidden screw head on the top of the tote (see photo) indicate an old repair. Most of the black jappanning remains, I assume it to be original. Brass adjusting wheel operates nicely, no dings or noticeable scratches. This is a type "8" plane, with the expected "B" foundry mark on the frog, Y, and under the tote on the body. One patent date on the lateral lever, also as expected."S" mark on the lever cap, leading me to date the piece to 1899, so one of the first corrugated sole 4 1/2 planes to be produced. Cutter has nice length and a "Q" mark, so likely to be original.
