For Sale we have a Lightly Restored 18" Stanley Made Hibbard, Spence, Bartlett & Co. 18" No. 198 Mahogany Fully Brass Bound Level and Double Plumb. Made in USA with nice grain and good character. The level was carefully restored to protect its provenance. It had a tool box ding that was filled and is an apology for this uncommon level.

Hibbard, Spence, Bartlett, & Co were hardware purveyors shipping to warehouses and retail outlets across America. The competed with Sears, Shapleigh, Montgomery Wards and other retailers and sold tools and hardware and household goods made by major manufacturers including Stanley, Union, Disston, Sargent and Millers Falls. Their Brand, OVB or Our Very Best was synonymous with quality and value. People were loyal to brands and HSB & Co. was no exception.

There is a dimple mark that was filled as shown in the pictures. The vials are all wet and accurate.

Dimensions are 18" x 1" x 2-1/8" with Fully Brass Binding.

As with the Stanley's of this style (1198). the bindings go through the end plates and the dovetail cuts are visible.

The wood appears to be mahogany and the brass plates are in very good shape. The level was professionally cleaned refinished and waxed with beeswax.
