Soviet WWII Researched 1945 Order of the Patriotic War Vistula-Oder Offensive

An exceptional piece reflecting the sacrifices made by soldiers of the Red Army on the Eastern Front. The Order of the Patriotic War was one of the most prestigious military Soviet awards that a Soviet soldier or officer could earn in the field. Wartime examples are made from silver in two pieces, and a little less than one million were awarded throughout the war. Though they were awarded in large numbers in 1985 as jubilee medals, honest wartime examples are much more sought after, usually accompanied by the stunning combat feats by the soldier who earned it during the war.

This piece comes with some amazing research, including a portrait of the recipient and well-documented information. This order was awarded to decorated Ukrainian Guards Captain Dmitriy Konstantonovich Plaksiy of the 1st Guards Breakthrough Artillery Division. This elite unit fought from Stalingrad to Berlin, then onto Prague in the last days of the war. During fierce fighting in Poland, on January 12th, 1945, during the final phase of the offensive and the crossing of the Oder river into Germany, Plaksiy, then a senior lieutenant, rained accurate artillery directly into German positions, disabling two machine gun positions and killing up to 40 Germans. One week later on January 19th, artillery fire under his command destroyed a German APC alongside all of the infantry it carried. He would go on to fight in Berlin and Prague, earning another Order of the Patriotic War for firing artillery on German troops at near point blank ranges.

The order shows some wear on the enamel but nonetheless displays beautifully, and could very well have been worn by Captain Plaksiy as he fought in Berlin. The serial number on the back, 531158, is clear, and the silver overall is free of blemishes. Provided is a transcript of the original citation and a rough translation. More information on the recipient can be requested and will be provided to the best of my ability. All in all, a truly phenomenal order awarded to a Soviet officer who showed nothing short of excellency during the Soviet Union’s final push towards Berlin.
