A Carte De Visite CDV photo of Major General Ormsby MacKnight Mitchell, nicely hand signed by him on the paper below the photo. Mitchell was a noted astronomer before the Civil War. He ordered the famous Great Locomotive Chase in 1861. In 1862, he was promoted to Major General and this photograph shows Mitchell wearing the two stars of that rank. He died later in 1862. The CDV is by Charles Taylor & Co of New Bedford. About 2 1/2\" x 4 1/4\". Good condition as shown with a stain on the front and old collector handwriting on the back. A rare piece of history and an awesome addition to any collection. I ship every day the post office is open with your item safely packed the way it deserves to be.
