This is ceramic art created by Señor Armando Silveira. This pottery is wonderfully constructed through the coil method completely by hand and with handmade tools. It is low and is wide with the very prominent wide mouth. The collar has a heavily textured belt of tick marks encircling it. The body of the pottery is filled with geometric triangles of all sizes and finishes, with the final result being an homage to Señor Silveiras ancestors of the Paquime culture in the Casas Grandes region of Chihuahua Mexico.
Señor Silveira is a senior member of the famous Silveira family who dominate much of the modern Mata Ortiz pottery making culture. This blackened pottery is a fine example of his supreme abilities. In the 70\'s ayoung man began experimenting with recreating ancient pottery he would comeacross. He used the same clay sand mixtures from materials found in the area inwhich the ancients lived and made their pottery. The same firing techniquesusing the same local materials eventually created the same magnificent results.Half a century later and much of the village of Mata Ortiz has taken on theseincredible skills for creating masterpieces, with each artist contributing hersand his own sense of beauty.

The designs arebold, earthy and individualistic.

Paint brushesconsisting of one or two human hairs create the finest lines. Images revealedthrough carvings are created by nearly microscopic sharpened points. Paints aredeveloped from minerals found in the surrounding desert. Many colors are onlyrevealed after intense firing at very high temperatures. These creations aretruly unique transformations that only this small little region of the worldcan create from it\'s own soil.

I have beentangentially around Mata Ortiz for 30 years. Now I am spiritually bound bytheir overwhelming beauty and intense and intricate designs. When I look at oneof the pieces, I feel I am meeting in person the artists who created this, andam visiting their home.
