Born in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture in 1965, Mr. Shodo Yamagiwa was born into a family of lacquer makers for generations. He uses unrefined lacquer to bring out the original flavor of lacquer, and specializes in de-dried lacquer techniques that involve direct application by hand. It takes at least 1 to 3 years to repeat the work of applying lacquer to the cloth and drying it repeatedly. In the future, the use of non-dry lacquer will decrease, and the technique of using shinshitsu, which requires more time and effort to make all lacquer, is becoming mainstream.
