Includes an excellent lithograph of San Jose, the largest city in Northern California, from 1875, when it was a city of 10,000 souls and the center of a rich agricultural valley at the southern end of San Francisco Bay (from the Book Club of California, 1986); and an excellent book (“San Jose and its Cathedral”), chronicling the rich history of this wealthy city of a million people, now in the heart of Silicon Valley, the dynamic hub of America’s tech industry. The book tells the story of San Jose (the first civil settlement in Spanish California, founded in 1777, as a complement to nearby Mission Santa Clara), and its early history as an agricultural outpost of, first Spain (1777-1821), then Mexico (1821-1846), the brief Bear Flag Republic in the year 1846, and the United States of America ever since. The story also includes the Catholic Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph (the city’s namesake and patron saint), a splendid Italian baroque church in downtown San Jose (from Western Tanager Press, 1990).
