SAN DIEGO STADIUM

San Diego Stadium, known over the years as Jack Murphy Stadium and later Qualcomm Stadium, was a prominent multi-purpose venue in San Diego, California. Opened in 1967, the stadium was originally named San Diego Stadium before being renamed in 1981 to honor Jack Murphy, the local sportswriter who played a crucial role in bringing major league sports to San Diego. In 1997, it became Qualcomm Stadium due to a naming rights deal. The stadium was situated in Mission Valley and featured a seating capacity of around 70,000, making it suitable for a wide variety of events, including football, baseball, concerts, and other major gatherings.

The stadium was home to several notable sports teams, most prominently the NFL's San Diego Chargers and Major League Baseball's San Diego Padres. The Chargers played at the stadium from its opening until 2016, and the venue witnessed numerous memorable moments and legendary players. Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts and running back LaDainian Tomlinson are among the notable Chargers who thrilled fans at the stadium. The Padres called the stadium home from 1969 until they moved to Petco Park in 2004. Baseball legends such as Tony Gwynn, known for his exceptional hitting and deep connection to San Diego, played their entire careers at the stadium. Additionally, the venue hosted significant events like the World Series in 1984 and 1998, showcasing the Padres' success during those seasons.

Beyond professional sports, Qualcomm Stadium was a site for major events, including Super Bowls, most notably Super Bowl XXII and Super Bowl XXXVII, and numerous college football bowl games like the Holiday Bowl and the Poinsettia Bowl. Despite its eventual aging infrastructure, which led to discussions about its replacement, the stadium left an indelible mark on San Diego's sports and entertainment history. In 2020, the stadium was demolished to make way for the San Diego State University campus expansion, but its legacy endures through the countless memories created there by fans and athletes alike.
